Morocco Unveils The World’s Largest Football Stadium

With a capacity of 115,000 seats, the Grand Stade Hassan II in Casablanca, Morocco, is expected to become the biggest football stadium in the world, right in time for the African country to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Along with Portugal and Spain, Morocco will host the competition; the final will take place in Casablanca. On the 100-hectare site, preparations for the stadium’s construction started in October 2023.

With a seating capacity of 114,000 and the home of North Korea’s national football team, Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in Pyongyang holds the distinction for being the largest football stadium in existence.

Global leaders in sports design Populous and Paris-based architects Oualalou + Choi created the stadium.

However, it won’t be the largest venue globally. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India, has the distinction. Although it does not stage football games, the cricket stadium can accommodate up to 132,000 spectators.

Inspired by the customary Moroccan social assembly known as a “moussem”, which brings Moroccan communities together for cultural interactions, the roof’s architecture is fashioned to resemble an opulent tent amidst the Cassablancan woodland.

Groups of gardens with smaller sports fields and complexes surround the main stadium. Located 38 kilometers north of Casablanca, this “oasis of greenery” incorporates botanical gardens to create a new degree of interaction between the stadium and the surrounding environment.

There are 29,500 regular admission seats at each end of the stadium, while an additional 12,000 seats are available in the five VIP hospitality tiers.
