NHIA Applauds Mahama for Lifting Cap On National Health Insurance Fund

President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership in uncapping the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), which is anticipated to increase healthcare accessible in Ghana, has been greatly appreciated by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

The National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) has been uncapped, according to Minister of Finance Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who made the announcement during his budget presentation in Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.

A total of GH¢9.93 billion has been allocated for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in order to: i) settle claims; ii) pay for critical medications; iii) pay for vaccines; iii) fund the Ghana Medical Care Trust (MahamaCares); and iii) cover the USAID funding deficit.

NHIA CEO Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe called the move a historic policy fulfillment in a statement released on March 11, 2025, stating that it is in line with the government’s pledge to provide affordable, sustainable healthcare for all Ghanaians.

More money will be available to improve healthcare services, increase coverage, and boost efficiency within the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as a result of the NHIF’s uncapping.

Additionally, this action shows the administration’s commitment to healthcare reform and carries out a major campaign pledge.
