NIA Staff Announce Indefinite Strike Over Poor Working Conditions

With effect from June 10, 2024, the National Identification Authority Division of the Divisional Executive Council of the Public Service Workers’ Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana has proclaimed an indefinite strike.

The government’s refusal to address subpar working conditions and bargain for improved service conditions for NIA employees is what sparked the walkout.

The union said in a statement on Sunday, June 9 that it has postponed its first notice of strike until March 2024 as a result of the Employment and Labor Relations Minister’s intervention.

Nonetheless, the union has resorted to industrial action because the administration has not made any forward in the discussion process.

The statement posits that the strike is predicated on multiple grounds, such as the government’s disregard for excessive delays in the bargaining process and the disbursement of institution-specific allowances to NIA staff.

As a result of the PSWU’s worldwide call for members to follow the decision until further notice, services at all NIA offices—including district, regional, and premium centers—are on hault.
