The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has fiercely criticized the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Kissi Agyebeng, for what it describes as a politically motivated attack on former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
In a strongly worded statement, the party condemned the OSP’s decision to declare Ofori-Atta a fugitive, arguing that he is abroad for medical treatment and has maintained communication with authorities.
Addressing the press at the party’s headquarters, NPP officials accused the Special Prosecutor of acting in bad faith, questioning why similar measures were not taken in past high-profile cases. They argued that Ofori-Atta had informed both the former and current Chief of Staff of his medical trip to the United States, providing official documentation from the Mayo Clinic as proof of his treatment.
The party further alleged that a raid on Ofori-Atta’s residence, led by armed security personnel and Richard Jakpa—a key figure in the controversial ambulance trial—was an intimidation tactic. “The Special Prosecutor should avoid making sensational statements and provoking public emotions over a matter that could have been resolved through correspondence,” the statement read.
Beyond the OSP’s actions, the NPP also criticized the Mahama administration’s directive to revoke public service appointments made after December 7, 2024. The party called the decision “illegal and regressive,” warning that it would lead to mass unemployment and undermine democratic governance. They compared the move to appointments made by the previous Mahama government in 2016, which the NPP had honored upon assuming office.
“The livelihoods of thousands of Ghanaians are at stake,” the party declared, vowing to support legal action against the mass revocations. “Public service appointments are not gifts; they are legitimate job opportunities earned through due process.”
The statement also accused the Mahama administration of double standards in its approach to fighting corruption, claiming that while opposition figures are being targeted, alleged wrongdoers from the ruling party are being shielded from prosecution.
As political tensions rise, the NPP has called on Ghanaians to resist what they describe as an abuse of power and hold the government accountable. .
