NPP MPs To Boycott Parliament Following Speaker’s Declaration Of 4 Vacant Seats

The Members of Parliament (MPs) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have said that they will be abstaining from proceedings in the near future.

This was revealed by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin during a Thursday appearance on the Asempa FM Ekosii Sen show.

The demonstration is in response to Speaker Alban Bagbin’s endorsement and decision on a resolution that called for the removal of four members of parliament.

The Speaker’s audacious decision has caused friction, as the Majority Caucus has voiced their displeasure.

In order to await the resolution of a matter before the Supreme Court, the side, according to the Effutu MP, will abstain from the Chamber and proceedings until further notice.

“We told the Speaker on Tuesday that the matter is before the Supreme Court which means we await interpretation. So with what has happened, we have to wait on the court to determine the matter and we are bound by it.

“We prefer to be on the side of the law than confusion,” he said.

Invoking Article 97 (1)(g) of the Constitution, former minority leader and Tamale South MP Haruna Iddrisu contested the status of a few colleagues who had crossed over prior to the December 7 election.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds three of the impacted seats, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has one.
