Kwesi Nyantakyi, ex-president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), admitted his willingness to serve as Ghana’s Sports Minister during an interview on Onua TV. He discussed his failed attempt to halt the release of investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ “Number 12” documentary.
The exposure of corruption in Ghanaian football through the documentary resulted in his resignation from his role as GFA President and receiving a lifetime ban from FIFA, later reduced to 15 years. Regarding his potential venture into mainstream politics, Nyantakyi expressed his willingness to serve as Sports Minister if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) wins the 2024 Ghana Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.
“When the NPP comes to power and decides to appoint me as Sports Minister, I may consider it. However, if it’s the NDC (National Democratic Congress), then it will be difficult.”
His tenure saw both success and controversy, with Ghana qualifying for multiple FIFA World Cups but also facing scrutiny over the management of football affairs. Nyantakyi’s involvement in the documentary led to his ban from football by FIFA, initially for life but later reduced to 15 years. Beyond football, Nyantakyi expressed political ambitions, considering a run for the parliamentary seat in the Ejisu Constituency under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) banner, and even contemplating the role of Sports Minister should the NPP retain power after the 2024 elections.
