Okyenhene Questions Why Agriculture & Land Ministries Are Sited in Accra
In order to ensure equal growth throughout the nation, the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has called on the government to relocate a number of ministries to different areas.
He maintained that people from other areas are compelled to move to Accra, the nation’s capital, because there are no jobs elsewhere. This is because the majority of state organizations that could offer work are located in Accra.
As a result, he is supporting the relocation of a number of ministries, such as the Forestry Commission, Lands and Natural Resources, and Food and Agriculture.
Speaking at a public lecture at the University of Ghana, he quizzed “Over 67 years, what is the Ministry of Agriculture doing in Accra, what is the Ministry of Lands and Resources doing in Accra? What is the Forestry Commission doing in Accra?”
“I have made suggestions that move these ministries and spread them all across different regions this way we can create new townships, real estate will be developed, commerce will go on and people will stay where they are to work.
“How can we build a national economy that excludes 75% of our population who live in the rural areas wallowing in poverty and hopelessness? They have no chance. There is no job.
“If the government is going to be the biggest employer, I suggest we bring these ministries,”
He emphasized that in order for everyone to gain, it was time to broaden the circle of opportunity to include more areas.
Speaking on the threat posed by unlawful mining, the Okyenhene advocated for a coordinated effort to end the issue.
He stated that a more forceful approach needed to be taken in order to put a stop to the threat.
