Benjamin Azamati and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, two Ghanaian sprinters, have both advanced to the men’s 100-meter semifinals of the current Paris Olympics.
With a time of 10.08 seconds, Ghana’s record holder in the event, Azamati, came in second in Heat 1 behind Kishane Thompson of Jamaica.
In that heat, there was some controversy as Jeremiah Azu of Great Britain was disqualified for a false start.
Saminu also finished Heat 7 in third position, trailing only Kayinsola Ajayi of Nigeria and Marcell Jacobs, the current Olympic champion, with a time of 10.06 seconds.
Azamati and Saminu have never advanced to the Olympic semifinals before.
On Sunday night, the men’s 100-meter semifinals will take place.
