Peter Amewu Unveils 7,000-Capacity Stadium In Hohoe

A 7,000-seat stadium in the Volta Region’s Hohoe was inaugurated by John Peter Amewu, the Hohoe Member of Parliament.

This is a major turning point in the growth of the sports infrastructure in the area, which has given rise to outstanding athletes that have helped Ghana’s reputation grow internationally.

According to Mr. Amewu, who started the project in 2005 while serving as the Chief Executive of Hohoe Municipality under the government of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, he had the notion to help develop potential in sporting disciplines.

He claimed that although he knew the initiative would benefit the entire constituency for many years, he missed a personal gift to start it.

“A very good friend gave me about 120,000 solid concrete blocks with the initial intention to build a hotel. But I decided these blocks would serve a better purpose here in Hohoe, so I transported them with several trailers and began construction”, Mr Amewu explained.

After he left office in 2008, the project was put on hold, but it was picked up again in earnest in 2016 when the New Patriotic Party took back power.

Mr. Amewu highlighted the contributions of Togbe Adzema and the late Gbi Paramount Chief, Togbega Gabusu, to the project’s success and thanked the community, traditional leaders, and private citizens for their assistance in overcoming obstacles like land acquisition and funding.

The facility’s ability to develop talent in Hohoe and the Volta Region was highlighted by Mr. Amewu, who also disclosed that several local athletes had already attracted the interest of national and international scouts.

The stadium, which can hold up to 10,000 spectators with standing room and more than 7,000 seats, is around 90% finished.
