An Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting will be held by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, to address urgent concerns regarding the Voters’ Register for the 2024 General Election.
The various political parties would be present at the meeting, which the Commission would arrange and was scheduled to take place in Accra on Tuesday morning.
According to reports, the Commission intended to utilize the occasion to outline the steps it was taking to correct certain observable mistakes in the register and foster agreement on maintaining a reliable record in advance of the elections on December 7.
The political parties would also be asked to share their concerns and recommendations about the Voters’ Register and other electoral-related matters during the meeting.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) expressed concerns about the register’s integrity after some voters were transferred without their permission, which led to ongoing pressure on the EC to carry out a forensic examination of the Voters’ Register.
As for the proposals for a forensic examination of the Provisional Voters’ registry, the EC has insisted that they are premature because they haven’t used all of the approved procedures to clean the registry.
In response to the NDC’s appeal, the Commission stated that it had mostly fixed the flaws found in the Register and that, prior to the register’s finalization, it will hold an online exhibition.
The Commission stated in a letter to the NDC, written by EC Chairwoman Mrs. Jean Mensa, that the Provisional Voters’ Register’s display permitted for discrepancy rectification and scrutiny.
It stated that the District Registration Review Officers’ recommendations and conclusions were being carried out by the Commission’s District Officers.
