Pregnant Woman Killed in Budumburam Building Collapse

On Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, tragedy struck as a 22-year-old pregnant woman lost her life when a building collapsed on her during a demolition operation in Gomoa Budumburam, Central Region.

Reports indicate that the deceased, identified as Serwaa, was asleep with her one-and-a-half-year-old child in their room when the building collapsed on them during the demolition operation.

Tragically, Serwaa, who was pregnant, succumbed to her injuries upon arrival at St. Gregory Hospital, while her child miraculously survived.

Residents shared that they returned from church only to find an excavator demolishing their homes. Despite pleading with the operator for more time to relocate, their requests were denied, and the demolition continued.

The body of the deceased is at the hospital morgue, while medical attention is on the surviving child.

The demolition is being conducted to make way for the construction of a market.

The Central Regional Coordinating Council previously sent request to chiefs overseeing the demolition to cease the operation but on contrary.

More than 300 displaced residents, currently seeking shelter in classrooms and churches, are appealing to the government for assistance.

Additionally, the incident is in record of the police station for further investigation.
