Real Madrid and Barcelona May Face Champions League Ban

Barcelona, Read Madrid may face potential bans from FIFA and UEFA competitions due to government intervention in overseeing the RFEF, following a suspension for a controversial kissing incident.

Prosecutors are seeking a two and a half-year jail sentence for Rubiales, who is accused of coercing Hermoso. An investigation into alleged corruption at RFEF under Rubiales went public in March, with multiple people arrested. Rubiales was summoned to court to testify in the probe. Pedro Rocha, who had been interim president since Rubiales’ departure, was announced as the new RFEF president.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has accepted a Supervision, Normalisation and Representation Commission, led by Vicente Del Bosque, to represent Spanish football, ensure transparency in the electoral process after the Olympic Games, and face challenges like the European Championship, Olympic Games, and 2030 World Cup.

FIFA and UEFA are concerned about the appointment of a Commission to the RFEF, which could impact its independence and management of its affairs. They have contacted Spain’s Supreme Council for Sports president, Jose Manuel Rodriguez Uribes, for clarification on the commission’s legal basis, composition, mandate, powers, and relationship with the RFEF’s decision-making bodies.

FIFA may suspend Spain as a member association, excluding them from Euro 2024 and Olympics, and potentially preventing Real Madrid, Barcelona, and La Liga from entering the Champions League and UEFA’s other club competitions, while Russia is currently suspended due to Ukraine’s invasion.
