Rooney Leaves Plymouth Argyle Following Poor Series Of Game Results

By mutual consent, head coach Wayne Rooney has departed Plymouth Argyle, a struggling team in the Championship.

After taking over the Pilgrims in May, the 39-year-old former England captain saw just four league victories and 13 losses in 23 Championship games.

He departs at the base of the division with them.

Four months after being fired by Birmingham City during an 83-day tenure as manager that saw nine losses in 15 games, Rooney arrived at Home Park.

After Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Oxford United, their sixth loss in a nine-game losing streak that started in early November, he and his team were jeered.

After that defeat, Rooney boldly declared that he did not take criticism “personally,” yet it was sufficient to remove the guy who had been hailed as “the perfect candidate to provide the exciting and attacking brand of football” when he was hired.

Plymouth has fallen to the bottom of the standings, scored the joint fewest goals in the second division, and given up more goals than any other team in England’s top four divisions under Rooney, who established scoring records for both Manchester United and England during his illustrious playing career.

First-team coach Simon Ireland and assistant head coach Mike Phelan have both left Home Park.

The team will be led by club captain Joe Edwards and first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell for Wednesday’s home match against Bristol City.
