Rwanda cuts diplomatic ties with Belgium over alleged meddling and neocolonialism

The Government of Rwanda has announced the immediate severance of diplomatic relations with Belgium, accusing the European nation of continued interference in its internal affairs and destabilizing the region.

A statement issued by Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday detailed the decision, citing Belgium’s “pitiful attempts to sustain its neocolonial delusions” and its alleged role in undermining Rwanda, particularly in the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The statement further accused Belgium of taking sides in regional conflicts and using “lies and manipulation” to incite hostility against Rwanda in international forums. Rwanda also alleged that Belgium has allowed its territory to be used by groups that deny and promote genocide ideology, referring to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

“This decision reflects Rwanda’s commitment to safeguarding our national interests and the dignity of Rwandans, as well as upholding the principles of sovereignty, peace, and mutual respect,” the statement read.

As part of the fallout, Rwanda has ordered all Belgian diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours. However, Kigali assured that, in accordance with the Vienna Convention, it would protect the Belgian diplomatic mission’s premises, property, and archives.

The announcement marks a significant breakdown in relations between Rwanda and Belgium, the country’s former colonial ruler. While tensions have simmered for years, this unprecedented diplomatic rupture underscores Rwanda’s growing defiance against what it perceives as foreign interference.

The Belgian government has yet to respond to Rwanda’s decision. However, the move is expected to have wide-ranging geopolitical implications in the Great Lakes region and beyond.

As the situation unfolds, the world will be watching how both nations navigate this high-stakes diplomatic crisis.
