Selling Kenkey On Thursdays Forbidden In Aburi
According to Nana Okyere-Kwame, Adonten Asokwahene, Thursday is not a good day to sell kenkey in Aburi and hence, a taboo.
He clarified that this was because the Thursday-visiting gods disliked the smell of corn.
This was disclosed by Nana Okyere-Kwame in an interview with Adom News.
He warned that the gods who are guiding and guarding the people of Aburi will become enraged if they break this commandment that their forebears set.
He said:
“It is a taboo to sell kenkey on Thursdays in Aburi, our forefathers made it so because the gods in Aburi don’t like any scent from maize. It’s believed that they visit the town on Thursdays so to prevent and curses from them, the sale of kenkey publicly was banned on Thursdays”
Remarkably, 45-year-old Stella Agyei, who has been selling kenkey in Aburi for the last ten years, backed up the chief’s claims.
She added that this customary law is followed by all Aburi vendors.
The town of Aburi is located in the Eastern region’s Akuapem South constituency. Famous for the Aburi Botanical Gardens, it is a popular tourist destination.
