Southampton Chases Arsenal Goalkeeper Ramsdale For £25m

Aaron Ramsdale, an England goalkeeper, might cost Southampton up to £25 million if Southampton and Arsenal reach an agreement on a fee.

Ramsdale, 26, is anticipated to sign before this Friday’s transfer deadline, with Saints offering an upfront payment of £18 million with the possibility of £7 million in add-ons.

After Southampton defeated Cardiff 5-3 in the Carabao Cup second round, Saints manager Russell Martin told BBC Radio Solent: “If it happens, it’s very, very exciting.”

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Arsenal had been in negotiations regarding the signing of the goalie, who will be David Raya’s backup at Emirates Stadium.

But they walked out because the price of the contract was too high.

In 2022–23, Ramsdale participated in every minute of Arsenal’s league games, helping the team finish second behind Manchester City.

But Raya, who came on loan from Brentford last season, took his spot.

Only six league games were played by Ramsdale, and Arsenal has subsequently converted Raya’s loan into a permanent signing.

He spent £24 million to join Arsenal from Sheffield United in 2021, and he played in the Premier League for the team in total of 78 games.

After being promoted back to the Premier League, Southampton has lost its last two games. The former Bournemouth goalkeeper now plays for Southampton.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper Alex McCarthy started the matches against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle, both of which resulted in 1-0 losses.

Ramsdale has played for England five times; the most recent was in June during England’s final match before the European Championship in Germany, where they faced Iceland.

On Saturday, Southampton travels to Brentford (15:00 BST).
