Sports Minister & GFA Officials To Be Investigated By parliament On 2023 AFCON Performance

Mustapha Ussif, the minister of youth and sports, is expected to testify before the Select Committee on Sports of Parliament in relation to an inquiry concerning Ghana’s performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

For the second time in a row, the Black Stars were eliminated from the Ivory Coast tournament during the group round.

Ussif is scheduled to respond to inquiries about the Ministry’s role in the Black Stars’ preparations and offer comprehensive details on the tournament’s expenditure plan and budget.

He will specifically be questioned about the rationale for spending more than $3 million on the Black Stars’ 11-day trip in Ivory Coast.

In addition, the Ghana Football Association, the Black Stars management committee, the Ghana League Clubs Association, the National Sports Authority, and both current and past Black Stars players will provide testimony to the committee, which is chaired by Kobina Woyome.

The committee will also hear testimony from the Save Ghana Football Forum, a pressure organization that staged a protest following the nation’s underwhelming AFCON campaign.

The parliamentary probe into Ghana’s 2023 AFCON campaign is set to begin on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.
