After leading Leicester to promotion from the Championship last season, Enzo Maresca joined Chelsea as head coach in May.
Steve Cooper, who led Nottingham Forest to the Premier League in 2022, has been named as Leicester City’s new first-team manager on a three-year contract, the club announced on Thursday.
Cooper said:
I am really excited and proud to be appointed Leicester City’s first-team manager,”
“This is a fantastic club with a rich history and passionate supporters. I am excited to work with such a talented squad and I’m looking forward to the challenge of achieving our shared ambitions in the Premier League.”
We are delighted to welcome Steve to Leicester City. His vision for the team, including his ability to develop players and implement a dynamic style of play, is very much aligned with our aspirations for the club,” Leicester City Chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said.
Cooper, who has also served as Swansea City’s coach, guided England’s under-17 squad to the 2017 European Championship final and a World Cup victory.
Cooper was fired by Forest in December 2023 following a run of five straight losses in six games. Nuno Espírito Santo took Cooper’s place as the team managed to stay in the Premier League despite losing points for breaking the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Due to purported violations, the league referred Leicester to an independent commission in March, and now the team is dealing with PSR issues of their own. In retaliation, the club filed lawsuits against the Premier League and Championship.
