Switzerland Kicks Out Title Holders Italy, Heads For Euro 2024 Quarter-Finals

Defending champions Italy exited Euro 2024 as Switzerland’s strong performance set up a possible quarter-final against England.

Switzerland dominated, with Ruben Vargas assisting Remo Freuler’s goal and then scoring himself just 27 seconds into the second half.

Italy did not manage a shot on target until the 73rd minute and their best effort before then came when Switzerland defender Fabian Schar headed Nicolo Fagioli’s cross against his own post, with Yann Sommer stranded.

Gianluca Scamacca also struck the woodwork before the finish, but the Azzurri never really threatened to mount a comeback, and their unmemorable campaign in Germany ended there.

Roaring home to Berlin from their raucous and often bouncing fan base, Switzerland will play the victorious team from England’s clash with Slovakia on Saturday, July 6 at 17:00 BST in Dusseldorf.
