Ter Stegen Gets Injured As Barcelona Widen La Liga Lead

Barcelona defeated Villarreal to protect their perfect record in La Liga, but their goalie, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, was taken off the field on a stretcher after suffering a potentially catastrophic injury.

Hansi Flick’s team won six out of six league games with two goals from Robert Lewandowski (who also missed a penalty kick), two goals from Raphinha, and one goal from Pablo Torre.

For Barcelona, though, Ter Stegen’s injury close to the conclusion of the first half proved concerning.

The 32-year-old captain of Barcelona and Germany international suffered injuries when his right knee gave way during a landing while he was catching the ball. He was carried off the field with his hands covering his face.

He was replaced by Inaki Pena and the back-up goalkeeper played a crucial part, making an excellent save to tip over an effort from former Arsenal forward Nicolas Pepe when the score was 2-1.
