According to a recent source, football player Thiago Alcantara, formerly of Barcelona, Bayern, and Liverpool, is planning to retire.
At the age of 33, Thiago is expected to end his professional career, according to Fabrizio Romano. Before joining Bayern Munich in 2013, the former Spain international was a regular at Camp Nou after making his professional debut for Barcelona B in 2008. He would stay with the team for seven years before making his last transfer to Liverpool in 2020.
Thiago struggled with injuries in recent seasons, playing just five minutes in 2023/24. He made 98 appearances for Liverpool before hip and muscle issues affected his career. His fitness challenges were a major factor in his decision to retire. There were brief rumors linking him to a return to La Liga with Girona before his announcement.
Thiago had a highly decorated career, winning numerous trophies. With Barcelona, he claimed four La Liga titles, along with the Copa del Rey, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. At Bayern Munich, he secured seven Bundesliga championships, four DFB-Pokals, and once again triumphed in the Champions League and Club World Cup. During his time at Liverpool, he added an FA Cup to his collection and reached the Champions League final. Despite his success, he earned only 46 caps for Spain, facing stiff competition from players like Xavi, Andres Iniesta, and Cesc Fabregas.
While Thiago intends to pursue a different career route, Romano says he wants to stay in football. It’s unclear if he’ll end up managing or coaching.
