Vincent Kompany has been named as Bayern Munich’s new head coach. His contract expires in 2027.
The Bundesliga heavyweights had decided back in February to part company with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the 2023–24 season, thus they had been searching for a new manager. They were unable to come to an understanding with any of their initial targets, though.
Former managers Julian Nagelsmann and Hansi Flick were considered for a return to Bayern Munich, but no deal was made with either. Ralf Rangnick also chose to stay with the Austria national team instead of joining Bayern.
There was speculation that Bayern might keep Tuchel as manager beyond this season, but the club’s leaders rejected this.
Bayern had been linked with managers like Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag, Brentford’s Thomas Frank, and Roberto De Zerbi, who recently left Brighton & Hove Albion. In the end, they chose Burnley boss Kompany.
Speaking to Bayern channels, Kompany said:
“I’m looking forward to the challenge of FC Bayern. It’s a great honour to be able to work for this club – FC Bayern is an institution in international football. As a coach, you have to stand for who you are as a person: I love having the ball, being creative – and we also have to be aggressive on the pitch and courageous. I’m now looking forward to the most basic things: working with the players, building a team. When the foundation is in place, success will follow.”
The Belgian manager led Burnley to win the Championship title in 2022/23 with an appealing possession-based style of play. However, his young team struggled in the Premier League and were quickly relegated, earning only 24 points from 38 games.
Before managing Burnley, Kompany spent two years in charge of Anderlecht and four games as a player-coach. In his 192 games as a manager, Kompany has achieved 83 wins, 58 draws, and 51 losses, with a win rate of 43.23%.
With Bayern finishing the 2023–24 season third in the Bundesliga behind Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen, Kompany has a challenging task ahead of him.
