“I Can’t Promise Building A New Stadium Under The Current Economy” – John Mahama

Former President and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama stated that he cannot commit to building a new stadium due to Ghana’s economic crisis, noting the country’s struggling sports infrastructure.

Ghana lacks a top-tier category A stadium, leading to compromises for continental football matches. During a media session, Mahama was asked how he planned to address this issue if elected in December’s General Elections.

He said:

“In the current crisis in which we are, I would not stand here and promise that we will build a new stadium,” he said.

“But I’ve said that under the big push, we intend to spend a certain amount of money over five years on providing a good infrastructure to include roads, bridges, agro-industrial parks, and so on and so forth.

“That could include sports facilities. And if we make allocation, then we probably would look at providing such a stadium,”

The only two venues that are currently in good enough condition to conduct significant multi-sport tournaments are the University of Ghana Stadium and the Borteyman Sports Complex, both of which were constructed for the 2023 African Games.
