Bawumia Unveils GMX, A New Local Streaming Platform
On Wednesday, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia introduced Ghana Music Xperience (GMX), a brand-new music streaming service for Ghanaians.
The De Icon Centre in East Legon, Accra, served as the venue for the event.
Omni Strategies is the owner of GMX, which will run with assistance from the Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Tourism.
The platform is scheduled to become live in January 2025.
During his speech, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) expressed hope that GMX would help Ghana’s music industry.
“The Ghana Music Xperience is more than just a music streaming platform, as was just illustrated. It is much more than that; it embodies what it means to preserve our culture, support our artistes, and leverage technology to foster economic growth within the creative arts,” he stated.
“There are a myriad of music streaming platforms, however, having one that is purely dedicated to Ghanaian music and musicians is a welcome addition in our digitalisation journey as a country,”
Ato Aduenu Tandoh, general manager of Omni Strategies, emphasized that in order for the app to fulfill its goal, cooperation is required.
“GMX is homegrown, reflecting our commitment to a ‘Ghana First’ agenda. It is also a call for action. We invite private entities, investors, and creative minds who share in our vision, to join us. Together we can ensure that every artiste has the tools and the opportunities t thrive,” he added.
Several representatives of the creative arts sector were present, including the president of the Musicians Union of Ghana, Bessa Simons; the marketing manager of Ghana Music Xperience, Akissi Ackah; the chief executive officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyeman; and the minister of tourism, arts, and culture, Andrew Egyapa Mercer.
