Michael Osei, Ex-Ghana Star & Former Asante Kotoko Coach Is Dead

Michael Osei, a legend of Asante Kotoko and a former Ghanaian international, died at the age of 53.

After battling an illness, the talented midfielder passed away in London on Friday, November 15, 2024, after transitioning into a renowned coaching career.

Osei’s football career started with Okwawu United, where Asante Kotoko, one of Ghana’s most prominent clubs, soon saw his extraordinary skill.

His outstanding on-field performances ultimately led to a transfer to Europe, where he played for Mainz 05 and Eintracht Frankfurt, two of the top German Bundesliga teams.

After retiring from playing, Osei transitioned to coaching, which had a big influence on Ghanaian football. He oversaw a number of neighborhood teams, including his beloved Asante Kotoko, Liberty Professionals, and New Edubiase United.

In the Ghana Premier League season of 2022–2023, he led the Bibiani Gold Stars to an incredible fifth-place result.

By working as assistant coach for Ghana’s U23 team, the Black Meteors, for five years until 2023, Osei also helped the country’s national football team grow.

Osei was still a well-liked figure in the football community even though he lived overseas in his final years. Supporters, teammates, and the country as a whole will remember his outstanding contributions to the sport as a coach and player.

He will be sorely missed, and his legacy will have a long-lasting effect on Ghanaian football.
