Police & GFA Unveil Plans For Dedicated Sports Policing Unit At Stadia

To improve safety and security at football games, the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have announced intentions to create a special Sports Policing Unit.

This action comes after Yaw Frimpong, a Kotoko supporter, was killed by fan violence during the recent tragic Matchday 19 match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko at Nana Kronmansah Park.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare described tactical steps to stop similar incidents in the future at a private meeting with club leaders.

To stop such attacks, the recently established Sports Policing Unit will strengthen intelligence operations, station trained security guards at game locations, and collaborate closely with supporter organizations.

Furthermore, police training programs will incorporate sports policing to guarantee that officers are adequately equipped to handle security concerns pertaining to football.

All teams promised to rigorously execute safety procedures on matchdays to guarantee a safe environment for both players and fans after their meeting with the 18 Premier League clubs on Thursday.
