National power outage disrupts water supply across Ghana – GWL apologises
The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has apologised to customers for widespread water supply interruptions following a national power outage that forced the shutdown of its treatment plants and pumping stations across the country.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the company said the ongoing electricity challenges being experienced by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) on the National Interconnected Transmission System have severely affected its operations.
The release disclosed that most of GWL’s water production systems rely on electricity from the national grid, making the power interruptions a major setback to water production and distribution.
“As a result of the power supply interruptions, most of GWL’s water production systems, which rely on electricity supplied through the national grid, are not operational,” the company state. Consequently, the company is currently unable to produce and distribute potable water to customers in the affected areas.
The power system disturbance occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m. on Wednesday, resulting in the simultaneous tripping of some generating plants across the national power system. The nationwide blackout left large parts of the country without electricity.
GRIDCo has activated its established system restoration procedures, with engineers and system operators working continuously to restore power. A comprehensive technical investigation has also been launched to determine the precise cause of the disturbance.
The Management of Ghana Water Ltd apologised to all affected customers for the inconvenience caused by “this unfortunate situation, which is beyond our control”. The company assured the public that its technical teams are on standby and will immediately resume production and distribution as soon as stable electricity supply is restored.
The GWL said it is working closely with relevant institutions in the power sector and closely monitoring the situation to ensure normal operations resume at the earliest possible time. The company appealed to customers for patience, understanding, and cooperation, adding that updates will be provided as the situation develops.
