Asamoah Gyan Calls On Ghanaians To Support President-Elect John Mahama

Asamoah Gyan, a former captain of the Black Stars, has urged Ghanaians to back President-elect John Dramani Mahama when he takes office.

After eight years in opposition, Mahama, the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), returned to the president with a victory over the reigning New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Gyan hailed the new government on social media and asked people to put national unity ahead of political differences.

“You know, when there is an issue, I will share my thoughts. Let’s support the government. Any government that comes to power, let’s support them. When you go and buy things at GHC 50 and you sell them at GHC 1000, the country will go through hardship,” he remarked.

The football legend emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach for the country’s success: “Ghana has decided. Let’s put party politics aside, and if your party has won, focus on government, and for us as citizens, we will also support.”

Gyan further emphasized that in order to advance under the current administration, a shift in perspective is required.

“We also have to change our attitudes, and we have to support the new government. Let’s congratulate the new government, and that is my message,” he stated.

“So as a good citizen or as a loyal citizen of this country, this is my message for you: Let’s congratulate the ruling party, which is the NDC, and let us support them, not sabotage them,” he added.

In September 2024, Gyan disassociated himself from party politics, citing a concentration on youth development and humanitarian activities, despite having previously been a member of the NPP’s 2024 manifesto team and chairing the Youth and Sports subcommittee.

With 51 goals in 109 games, Gyan holds the record for most goals scored in Ghana’s history and is still regarded as a national hero.
