Julian Alvarez, a striker for Manchester City, was signed by Atletico Madrid for £81.5 million on a six-year contract.
The Spanish team led by Diego Simeone will pay the Argentina striker an initial £64.4 million (75 million euros), with possible add-ons of £17.1 million (20 million euros).
With the 24-year-old’s departure, City has sold more for a record amount than they did for Raheem Sterling in 2022—£50 million—from Chelsea.
In January 2022, they paid River Plate of Argentina £14.1 million for Alvarez.
Alvarez declared that he will always “have a special place” in his heart for City, where he won six major trophies during his two-year tenure.
He stated:
Today I say goodbye to this amazing club, with a lot of emotion,” he said.
“These have been two very special years. During this time, I have grown and learnt a lot – both as a player and as a person.”
In his first season at the club, he won the triple crown. He also won the 2022 World Cup while playing for Argentina in the middle of the season.
After 106 City appearances and 36 goals, the striker is leaving Manchester.
Txiki Begiristain, the city’s director of football, described Alvarez as “a pleasure to work with.”
Sunday’s trip to Chelsea marks City’s Premier League opener.
The first weekend of the La Liga season, August 19, saw Atletico Madrid play Villarreal.
