Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, has agreed to a new deal that would keep him at Old Trafford until June 2027, with an additional year’s option.
In his 234 club appearances, the Portugal midfielder has 79 goals and 67 assists to his name.
Fernandes, 29, signed a contract in 2022 that was scheduled to expire in 2026. He moved from Sporting Lisbon to United in January 2020 for a sum of £47 million.
In July 2023, Fernandes took Harry Maguire’s place as United’s club captain.
Even though the midfielder has occasionally faced harsh criticism from former United captains Gary Neville and Roy Keane, Erik ten Hag, the manager of United, has continued to have faith in him.
Fernandes was excluded from the “untouchables” group. For this summer, United refused to consider any proposals.
But a sale was always going to depend on a bid that the club could not refuse, and that deal hasn’t come through.
Before the FA Cup final in May, the player expressed uncertainty about his own future by stating that he wanted his individual goals to align with the team’s overall goals.
Dan Ashworth, the sporting director of Manchester United, referred to Fernandes as a “brilliant leader” who is assisting staff members and players in “performing at their highest levels.”
