Ghana, Serbia seal sports partnership

Ghana has taken a bold step towards strengthening its global sports diplomacy after signing a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Serbia, aimed at deepening cooperation in sports development, talent exchange and training opportunities.

The agreement was signed last Friday at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra by Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, and Serbia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Marko Đurić, during a high-level bilateral meeting that underscored the mutual interest in leveraging sports as a tool for development and diplomacy.

The MoU sets the stage for a vibrant partnership that will see Ghana tap into Serbia’s globally respected expertise in athletics, coaching, basketball and sports management.

Serbia’s advanced National Sports Training Centre and other sports facilities were highlighted as potential venues for Ghanaian athletes and coaches to gain world-class experience.

Mr Đurić, in his remarks, emphasised the historical ties dating back to the era of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, stressing the importance of building on that legacy through modern-day collaboration in sports.

“We live in a turbulent world where conflict is ever present. This MoU is part of our belief that sports and culture can help shift the focus of decision-makers and societies towards a more positive, human-centred agenda,” he stated.

The Serbian minister extended a special invitation to Ghana to participate in the 2027 International Sports and Cultural Expo in Belgrade, a global event that has already confirmed interest from over 117 countries.

“This exhibition, under the theme ‘Play for Humanity’, is dedicated to celebrating sports and culture as tools for peace. We will be honoured to host Ghana and promise extraordinary treatment and a prominent platform to showcase all the beauty and culture the country offers,” he said.

In response, Mr Adams expressed profound appreciation for Serbia’s interest and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening international sports partnerships.

He noted that the collaboration is timely, especially as Ghana looks to grow its footprint in basketball, a sport in which Serbia ranks among the world’s elite.

“This is fantastic news, particularly as 2027 marks Ghana’s 70th anniversary as an independent nation. Participating in the Serbia expo will be a great opportunity to showcase our sporting excellence and cultural identity,” Mr Adams stated.

He also encouraged Serbia to consider Ghana as a hub for pre-tournament training camps, touting the country’s favourable climate, growing infrastructure and hospitality.

“Our doors are open. Ghana is ready to receive Serbian teams and technical delegations. This partnership has great potential to create a lasting impact for both nations,” he added.
