Van Dijk Disappointed as Liverpool Exits Europa League

Mohamed Salah scored an early penalty for Liverpool, giving them a 1-0 win in Bergamo on Thursday night. However, the team suffered a 3-0 defeat in the first leg at Anfield last week, which ultimately cost them the match. Serie A team held strong, advancing to the semi-finals on aggregate.

After the match, Van Dijk spoke to TNT Sports, expressing his disappointment at the end of Liverpool’s European journey. He admitted that they faced a tough task after falling behind by too much in the first leg.

“Firstly, credit to Atalanta,” said the captain. “The damage was done last week [when] we were very poor and they had the perfect game. They deserve to go through. We made it far too difficult for ourselves with the result last week.

“Today was a good game, great fight. Obviously we won but it doesn’t feel like it really. Obviously it’s an improvement, but the reality is that we are out and we have to quickly turn this around, recover and travel to London on Saturday.

“We need everyone for that last push, and that’s the feeling that I’m getting now.”

We are disappointed to go out of the competition, because it is something that we really wanted to win. But the damage was done last week and that’s something we have to be very disappointed in.”

Now, Liverpool needs to get ready to play in the Premier League again. They have a match against Fulham on Sunday, followed by games against Everton and West Ham United next week.

Liverpool had a chance to make a comeback against Atalanta when Salah scored a penalty just seven minutes into the game because of a handball. However, even though they controlled the game, they couldn’t score more goals to decrease the difference in score.
