Bawku: Government lifts daytime motorbike ban for women, men remain barred
The government has eased restrictions on motorbike use in the Bawku Municipality and surrounding communities by allowing women to ride motorbikes during the day, while the ban on men remains in force.
The new directive permits women to use motorbikes between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. each day. Men are still prohibited from riding motorbikes in the area until further notice.
The decision was announced by the Ministry of the Interior after the Minister for the Interior, acting on the advice of the National Security Council, issued an Executive Instrument on Wednesday.
The Ministry appealed to residents of Bawku and nearby communities to comply with the directive, saying observance of the measures would help maintain peace and security in the area.
The restriction on motorbike use has formed part of the wider security measures introduced in Bawku following recurring violence linked to the long-running chieftaincy dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities.
The curfew in Bawku was first imposed in November, 2021 and has since been reviewed several times as the security situation changed.
The Ministry renewed the curfew on January 13, January 27 and again in March, 2026, maintaining the ban on carrying arms, ammunition and offensive weapons, alongside the restriction on motorbike use.
Security measures were tightened in the middle of 2025 after a fresh wave of violence that included the killing of a Kusasi chief and attacks on students at a school in Bawku.
