The government of Ghana has evacuated 85 Ghanaian nationals from Cambodia between March and May 2026, with arrangements ongoing to bring home an additional 76 citizens who have expressed a desire to return voluntarily, Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed.
The evacuation exercise, facilitated through Ghana’s High Commission in Malaysia, which is concurrently accredited to the Kingdom of Cambodia, comes as Cambodian authorities issued a firm denial of a fake notice circulating online that purported to order African nationals to leave the country by May 31, 2026.
“I can assure Ghanaians that prior to the publication of this fake notice, a number of Ghanaians in Cambodia had reached out to us requesting to be evacuated, and are already being assisted by the Foreign Ministry and our High Commission in Malaysia,” Mr Ablakwa said in a tweet on Friday, May 29, 2026.
Between March and May this year, the Foreign Minister stated, 85 Ghanaians have been successfully evacuated from Cambodia. Seventy-six more are being evacuated to complete the exercise.
“The welfare of Ghanaians anywhere in the world remains our priority,” Mr Ablakwa said, ending his tweet with the national motto: “For God and Country.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a separate press release issued on Friday, confirmed that some Ghanaian nationals resident in Cambodia had, before the circulation of the fake notice, expressed a desire to voluntarily return to Ghana. The government, through its High Commission in Malaysia in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, has already facilitated the evacuation of the eighty-five nationals.
It is worth noting that arrangements are ongoing to equally facilitate the evacuation of an additional seventy-six Ghanaian nationals currently in Cambodia who have expressed the desire to return home, the Ministry stated.
The Ministry said it will continue to work in close collaboration with all relevant authorities to ensure the safety, welfare and protection of Ghanaian nationals in Cambodia, and commended the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia for what it described as impressive cooperation.
The evacuation update came as both Ghanaian and Cambodian authorities moved swiftly to debunk a fake notice that had circulated widely on social and traditional media platforms. The fraudulent document claimed that citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda and other African countries had been directed to leave Cambodia by 31st May 2026 or risk arrest, imprisonment and financial penalties for immigration violations.
The General Department of Immigration of the Ministry of Interior of the Kingdom of Cambodia issued a press clarification on Friday stating that the information published on certain websites was “completely untrue”. The Cambodian authorities noted that the fake notice had appeared on websites with the addresses https://campaigneronline.com and https://www.newsghana.com.
The Ghana Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that, following diplomatic engagements with the relevant Cambodian authorities, it had been confirmed that the said notice was absolutely fake and was not issued by any state institution in Cambodia.
The Ministry advised the general public and the Ghanaian media to disregard the discredited document and avoid sharing unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear and anxiety among affected persons and their families.
The government of Ghana reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the interests of Ghanaian nationals and urged the public to rely solely on official sources for information on matters concerning Ghanaian citizens. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated it is working in conjunction with competent authorities in Cambodia to ensure the safe return of the Ghanaians still awaiting evacuation.
“The general public and the Ghanaian media are, therefore, advised to disregard the discredited document and avoid sharing unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear and anxiety among affected persons and their families,” the Ministry’s press release read.
Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs cautions that the notice in circulation claiming that Ghanaians have been asked to leave Cambodia is FAKE.
