Ghanaian winger’s assist not enough as Salzburg lose

Europa League: Ghanaian winger Edmund Baidoo’s assist not enough as Salzburg lose 3-2 at Aston Villa.

Ghanaian international Edmund Baidoo assisted a goal for Red Bull Salzburg on Thursday night, but it was not enough as the Austrian outfit suffered a 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa in the Europa League.

Salzburg made an impressive start to the contest and took the lead in the 33rd minute through a moment of quality from Baidoo. The Ghanaian showed excellent awareness to pick out Karim Konate inside the box, and the forward kept his composure to finish from close range and put the visitors ahead.

The Austrian side doubled their advantage shortly after the break when Kerim Alajbegovic provided the assist for Moussa Kounfolo Yeo, who calmly slotted the ball into the centre of the goal to make it 2-0 and place Salzburg in firm control.

Aston Villa, however, responded with renewed intensity and pulled one back in the 65th minute. Emiliano Buendia split the defence with a precise through ball, allowing Morgan Rogers to beat the goalkeeper at close range and reduce the deficit.

The hosts completed their comeback momentum in the 76th minute as Matty Cash delivered an inviting cross into the area, where Tyrone Mings rose highest to head home the equaliser and level the score at 2-2.

Villa’s turnaround was sealed late in the match when Kadan Young threaded a clever pass to Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba on the edge of the box. The teenager curled a superb effort into the bottom right corner in the 87th minute to give the English side a decisive 3-2 victory.

The defeat means Edmund Baidoo and his Red Bull Salzburg side are out of this season’s Europa League competition.
