AMA to revive Kpaashimo Festival

AMA to revive Kpaashimo Festival as Chorkor beach clean-up gains momentum.

The Municipal Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has assured fisherfolk and residents of Chorkor that discussions are ongoing to revive the Kpaashimo Festival in a restructured and more beneficial form.

The assurance was given during a working visit to the Chorkor Electoral Area, where the Mayor inspected a beach clean-up exercise aimed at improving environmental sanitation, safeguarding public health and restoring the coastline.

According to a statement shared on Facebook, the suspension of the festival was a deliberate move to allow for its reorganisation to better reflect the interests and aspirations of the local community.

Addressing concerns raised by residents and fisherfolk, Mr Allotey urged calm, expressing confidence that the review process would yield a positive outcome for all stakeholders.

Focus on livelihoods and coastal development

The engagement brought together assembly officials, residents and members of the fishing community, with discussions focusing on livelihoods, cultural heritage, sanitation, security and long-term development prospects for the Chorkor coastline.

Sanitation drive linked to economic prospects

Mr Allotey emphasised the importance of maintaining clean and well-managed beaches, noting that improved environmental conditions could position the area to attract tourism-related investments, including hotel developments.

He explained that such investments could generate employment opportunities, particularly for the youth, while contributing to the growth of the local economy.

Beach restoration seen as catalyst for growth

The Mayor indicated that restoring the beachfront would not only enhance sanitation but also serve as a catalyst for broader economic transformation within the community.

He added that sustained efforts to keep the beach clean and properly managed would make the area more attractive to investors and help improve livelihoods in Chorkor.

No timeline was provided for the revival of the Kpaashimo Festival or the completion of the ongoing beach restoration efforts.
