GFA holds crisis meeting with Black Stars technical team after Austria thrashing, demands improved performance against Germany.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) convened a crisis meeting over the weekend with the Black Stars’ technical team in response to the team’s heavy defeat to Austria.
The meeting follows Ghana’s 5-1 loss in the first of two international friendlies played last Friday at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, a result that has sparked concern about the team’s readiness.
Austria dominated the encounter from the outset, taking the lead in the 12th minute when Marcel Sabitzer converted a penalty after a handball by Ghana defender Jonas Adjetey. The hosts extended their advantage in the second half with goals from Michael Gregoritsch and Stefan Posch.
Jordan Ayew pulled one back for Ghana in the 77th minute, but Austria quickly reasserted control. Carney Chukwuemeka, coming off the bench, added a fourth before Nicolas Seiwald completed the rout with a stoppage-time goal.
In the aftermath, the GFA leadership and its Management Committee met with head coach Otto Addo and his technical staff, tasking them to deliver improved performances in upcoming fixtures. Reports suggest the coach’s position could come under serious review if results do not improve.
Attention now turns to Ghana’s next assignment, a friendly against Germany in Stuttgart tonight, where the Black Stars will be aiming to bounce back.
The matches are part of the team’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Ghana is scheduled to face Mexico and Wales in subsequent friendlies in May and June, before heading into the tournament, where they will compete in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.
