Ghana coach reflects on Germany test

‘It’s always good to get these kinds of experiences,’ Otto Addo reflects on Germany test.

Ghana coach Otto Addo has described the experience of facing Germany as invaluable, despite the Black Stars falling to a 2-1 defeat in Stuttgart.

Just days after a humiliating 5-1 loss to Austria, Ghana produced a much-improved display against the former world champions, with substitute Fatawu Issahaku scoring a stunning goal to keep the contest competitive until the final whistle.

Addo, while disappointed with the result, emphasised the importance of testing his side against elite opposition as they prepare for the World Cup.

“We improved a lot if you compare this game to the game against Austria, and we learnt a lot, and for us it’s always good to get these kinds of experiences. Even though we lost, we are taking everything with us. And the boys will take everything with us. I thought it was good to face this kind of quality.”

The defeat extended Ghana’s losing streak to four matches, following setbacks against Japan and Korea in November. But the performance against Germany offered signs of resilience and tactical discipline that had been absent in Vienna.

Addo will hope the lessons from both friendlies—the harsh reality check against Austria and the competitive showing against Germany—serve his squad well as they continue preparations.

Ghana return to action in May with friendlies against Mexico and Wales before their World Cup campaign begins against Panama on June 17 in Toronto.
