“I thought I had gone mad” – Ofori Amponsah on his first weed experience

Ghanaian highlife musician Ofori Amponsah has opened up about a frightening experience from his school days after trying weed for the first time and later consuming alcohol.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Atuu on August 23, 2026, the veteran musician said he grew up in a God-fearing home and has always considered himself a reserved person. According to him, this background influenced the extent to which he involved himself in certain activities associated with the music industry.

“I’m a very reserved person and I’m from a Godly background. Some things that people go deep into for the music, I didn’t go that deep,” he explained.

Ofori Amponsah said that although he does not see alcohol consumption as unusual and does not consider weed inherently bad, his first experience with it left him badly frightened.

He recalled that his mother had warned him during his school days that smoking weed could make him “go mad.” However, after spending time with friends, he said they convinced him that his mother’s warning was simply meant to discourage him from trying it.

“One day, when we went for entertainment, my friends convinced me that my mother was lying to me that I would run mad,” he recalled.

The Otoolege hitmaker eventually decided to try it. According to him, he smoked the weed and later drank two bottles of alcohol, an experience that left him confused and unable to properly remember some of the events that followed.

“After smoking the weed, I was given two bottles of alcohol and I drank all of it in addition. I didn’t know what was going on with me,” he said.

The situation became even more terrifying when he was startled by the sound of a car horn while on the road. At that moment, he said, his mother’s warning immediately came back to him, and he became convinced that he had actually gone mad.

“I was the entertainment prefect, but I don’t really remember the things I did there. A car blew its horn at me on the road. I remembered my mother told me I would run mad and it has happened,” he stated.

Ofori Amponsah said the incident was enough to scare him away from going further into such activities.

“That was my first time and it frightened me, so I didn’t go deeper into it,” he added
