Anthony Baffoe urges Black Stars players to back Asntoine Semenyo amid national team struggles.
Former Ghana international Anthony Baffoe has called on Black Stars players to offer stronger support to Antoine Semenyo, insisting improved teamwork will help unlock the forward’s full potential at the international level.
Semenyo, 26, has been in outstanding form at club level, enjoying a prolific campaign with Manchester City. However, he has struggled to replicate that form for Ghana, scoring just three goals in nearly five years with the senior national team.
Speaking to journalists at the German Ambassador’s Residence in Accra during a watch party for the Ghana–Germany friendly on March 30, Baffoe highlighted the contrast between Semenyo’s club environment and the current state of the national team.
“Semenyo is a top-class player, but at the moment, Black Stars are now Man City,” he said.
“So everything around him is totally different, and don’t forget, we are playing without the likes of Kudus, Kamaldeen just came back from injury.
“Thomas Partey is not 100% in shape, which is also fully understandable. They need to be in top form.
“I think Jordan had a very good match. He was very, very active on the pitch. So if those guys are really also in shape, I think Semenyo also will be good. They’ll provide better balls for him,” Baffoe added.
Despite scoring 15 goals across competitions this season, Semenyo was unable to make a significant impact in Ghana’s recent outings, featuring in defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international window.
The Black Stars will look to regroup in May with friendly matches against Mexico and Wales as they step up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.
