Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) chairman Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has backed Carlos Queiroz to remain as Black Stars coach despite the team’s poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Ghana, four-time African champions, are without a point after losing their opening two Group C matches.
The Black Stars began their campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Ivory Coast before suffering a 4-2 loss to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, despite taking a two-goal lead.
The results have intensified calls for the Portuguese coach to be dismissed, with Queiroz facing growing criticism after failing to secure a win in his first two AFCON qualifying matches.
Queiroz was retained after guiding Ghana to the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup, ending a 16-year wait for the Black Stars to progress beyond the group stage.
However, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe believes the 73-year-old should be given more time to turn the team’s fortunes around.
“With the present coach, I will say he should be just left alone. Absolutely, he should remain,” the Hearts of Oak board member told Citi FM.
“What we saw yesterday [against The Gambia] was not his fault. He is a good stopgap coach, and he showed it when he took us to the World Cup. Such a coach, you don’t throw him away.
“If we did that, looking for another coach will not be easy. Another coach who can bring these boys up will not be easy, I can assure you.
“Nobody should sack him, or nobody should put pressure on him.”
Ghana’s poor start has left them facing an early battle to revive their qualification hopes, having also missed the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
The Black Stars will return to action in November for back-to-back Group C qualifiers against Somalia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
