Kasoa to get new school as Assembly

Kasoa to get new school as Assembly, Prisons Service launch construction project.

The Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly, in partnership with the Ghana Prisons Service and the Ghana Education Service, has begun the construction of a new elementary school at Kasoa to help address the growing demand for educational infrastructure in the fast-expanding municipality.

The project was officially launched with a sod-cutting ceremony on Thursday, March 5, 2026, attended by traditional leaders, education stakeholders, officers of the Ghana Prisons Service and members of the community.

Also present at the ceremony were the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, and the Municipal Chief Executive, Seth Sabath Serwornoo-Banini.

In his welcome address, the MCE said the construction of the school represented an important step towards addressing the educational needs of the rapidly growing Kasoa area. He noted that the project would help expand access to quality education for children in the municipality.

He added that when completed, the school would be managed by trained officers of the Ghana Prisons Service in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Director of Prisons in charge of Operations, Benedict Bob-Dery, said the initiative was inspired by the leadership of the Director-General of Prisons, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie.

He explained that the project forms part of the Service’s welfare and community development agenda under the Think Prisons 360 Degrees Initiative, which seeks to strengthen cooperation between the prisons administration and communities.

The Municipal Education Director said the rapid population growth in Kasoa had not been matched with adequate planning for key infrastructure such as schools, markets and health facilities. He said the construction of the new school would help ease pressure on existing educational facilities in the municipality.

The Chief of Ofankor also welcomed the initiative and called for sustained investment in educational infrastructure to support the area’s expanding population.

Providing details of the project, the Municipal Engineer said it would include a two-unit classroom block with changing rooms for pupils from Nursery to Primary level, as well as an additional two-unit classroom block for Junior High School students. The facility will also include other supporting infrastructure to provide a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Addressing the gathering, the MP for Awutu Senya East described the sod-cutting ceremony as symbolic and historic, stressing that it signified a major step towards improving educational opportunities in the municipality.

She said Kasoa, which she described as the fourth largest municipality in Ghana, required quality educational infrastructure to serve its growing population. She also disclosed that plans were underway to eventually establish a secondary school in the area.

The MP further urged the contractor to complete the project within the stipulated timeframe and encouraged community members to support the construction process.

The sod-cutting ceremony was jointly performed by the MP, the Director of Prisons in charge of Operations, the Municipal Education Director, the Officer-in-Charge of Awutu Camp Prison, CSP Catherine Mawunya Gagakuma, and traditional leaders.

In closing remarks, the Officer-in-Charge of Awutu Camp Prison expressed appreciation to dignitaries and community members for supporting the project, describing it as an investment not only in infrastructure but also in the future of children in the municipality.
