Portugal-based midfielder confident Ghana can progress

World Cup 2026: Portugal-based midfielder Lawrence Ofori confident Ghana can progress beyond the group stage

Ghanaian midfielder Lawrence Ofori believes the Black Stars can make it out of their group at the FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars will face Central Americans Panama in their opening game before engaging 1966 winners England and 2018 runners-up Croatia in Group L.

Ghana qualified for the World Cup after finishing top of their group, winning eight matches, drawing one and losing one.

However, their failure to qualify for AFCON 2025 has left many in doubt of the team’s chances.

But Ofori remains confident the Black Stars will advance from Group L.

“I know we’re not favorites, but we don’t shy away from the fight. We face the situations head-on and I believe we’ll get through the group stage. I’m confident in the players and I think we’ll go far,” said the Casa Pia midfielder.
Ofori also reflected on Ghana’s best World Cup performance as the team almost became the first side from Africa to reach the semi-finals of the competition.

“In 2010 we almost reached the semi-finals, but Suárez saved that goal with his hand and we couldn’t advance. This year will be different,” he added.

The Black Stars are currently in Virginia, rounding up preparations ahead of their group opener against Panama.
