The President of the Republic of Ghana has said Akonta Mining has not engaged in any illegality as speculated.

Akonta Mining belongs to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako. Chairman Wontumi’s company has been in the news for mining in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Western Region without recourse to the law.

According to Nana Akufo Addo, Chairman Wontumi’s firm is engaged in a legal business in the mining sector. He assured them of his commitment to building a lawful nation.

I want to assure you all that Akonta Mining is not engaged in any form of illegal mining. The firm operaates legally. He added.

The Lands Ministry had tsked the Forestry Commission to prevent future occurrences. Necessary action s will be taken against any person found culpable in the matter. Illegal mining has gained roots in the country.

Nana Akufo-Addo’s comment came after it pronounced all activities being undertaken by the company in the Forest Reserve as illegal. The mining company has a lease to undertake mining operations in some parts of Samreboi. The company, however, has no mineral right to undertake any mining operations in the Tano Nimiri forest reserve.

Ghanaians have been calling for the prosecution of persons running Akonta Mining Limited. Before today, there were called to halt their activities until the investigation is done.  The office of the Special Prosecutor is also looking into the case.

Media Coalition Against Galamsey has revived its calls for the arrest of persons leading the firm. Akonta mining executives have also denied wrongdoings. Chairman Wontumi has also publicly denied any illegality in his activities.

I am appealing to them to use the law. They should do their investigations, and we should let the law work. He said on his TV station, Wontumi TV.
