Chereponi Assembly, MP hands over projects

The Chereponi District Assembly, in collaboration with the Member of Parliament (MP) for Chereponi, have completed and handed over nine development projects aimed at improving access to education, healthcare, clean water, and accommodation across communities in the district.

The projects include the renovation of a three-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at Kukpong; the District Agric Director’s bungalow; the girls’ dormitory at Chereponi Senior Technical School; and Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds at Naja and Adali.

Others are the construction of a fully furnished three-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities, electricity, ceiling fans, office and store rooms, and a changing room for female students at Tambong D/A Junior High School, as well as three hand-pump boreholes at Nachem, Papaye, and Lalitani.

Speaking at the handing-over ceremony at Tambong, the Chereponi District Chief Executive (DCE), Sheini Kofi Amadu, described the projects as evidence of the Assembly’s commitment to equitable development and the fair distribution of resources across the district.

Mr Amadu expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama, the MP, and traditional authorities for their support in making the projects a reality. He urged beneficiary communities to take ownership of the facilities and maintain them to ensure their long-term sustainability.

The Member of Parliament for Chereponi, Alhassan Seidu Alajor, said the projects formed part of the commitments made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 general election campaign.

According to him, some of the projects were initiated under a former NDC Member of Parliament but remained uncompleted for years.

He explained that their completion was made possible through collaboration between his office and the District Assembly, with support from his share of the MP’s Common Fund.

“The completion of these projects and the execution of new ones are in response to the critical needs of our communities and the confidence the people reposed in me to represent them,” he said.

Mr Alajor noted that the renovated CHPS compounds at Adali and Naja had been equipped with staff accommodation, transportation support, and water systems, including a mechanised water supply at Adali, to strengthen healthcare delivery and attract health professionals to the facilities.

He said the two health centres are expected to serve about 20 surrounding communities each, bringing healthcare services closer to residents, particularly expectant mothers, children, and other vulnerable groups.

The MP described the newly completed classroom block at Tambong D/A JHS as one of the district’s major investments in education. The facility includes office and storage spaces, toilet facilities, a changing room for female students, electricity, ceilings, and ceiling fans to create a conducive learning environment.

He said the project would help bridge the infrastructure gap between rural and urban schools while supporting quality teaching, learning, and ICT education.

He noted that the renovation and completion of the girls’ dormitory at the district’s only senior high school had brought significant relief to students, particularly female students who previously faced challenges due to the lack of decent accommodation.

According to him, the project was especially important because of the poor condition of the facility before its refurbishment.

“The renovation of this girls’ dormitory is very dear to my heart because its condition was so deplorable that it was unfit for occupation, especially by female students. Today, the situation has changed. The facility now provides them with decent accommodation, comfort, security, and a conducive environment for learning,” he said.

Mr Alajor further disclosed that several development projects were ongoing across the district and appealed to residents to remain patient and continue supporting the government’s efforts to improve livelihoods.

The MP thanked the DCE, the Coordinating Director, and the staff of the assembly for supervising the quality work and expressed appreciation to the contractors for completing the projects on time to serve the purpose.

The Chereponi District Director of the Ghana Health Service, Yakubu Abdul-Rahama, welcomed the completion of the CHPS compounds, describing them as timely interventions that would complement the government’s free primary healthcare agenda.

He said the facilities would reduce the burden of travelling long distances to access healthcare and announced that midwives would be posted to the centres to improve maternal and child health services.

The District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service also commended the Assembly and the MP for expanding educational infrastructure and improving sanitation, electricity, and classroom conditions in beneficiary schools.

However, the Directorate appealed for the construction of teachers’ accommodation in remote communities to help retain staff and improve educational outcomes.
